Books - Weight Loss

My Online Therapy does not advocate the use of popular fad diets. Various diets come in and out of vogue and the weight loss experienced is not usually permanent. We prefer to focus on how clients think about food and their relationship with it. If we change the way people think about eating, their eating changes, and the changes are permanent.

This is not popular and it is certainly not what people want to hear. Most people spend years becoming overweight and/or out of shape. However, when they get ready to fix it they want and immediate quick fix. Quick fixes are not usually healthy and almost always fail in the long run. It may not be what you want to hear, but in our opinion a healthy, balanced diet combined with good, safe exercise is the best "diet" of all.

We have collected some of our favorite books to help you with this goal.

"Diets Don't Work"
Bob Schwartz, Ph.D.
I loved this book the first time I ever read it. An oldie, but a goodie, its lessons are still very true. If you want to be thin, study a thin person, not a fat person. Written exercises help you identify your "fat" thinking and Dr. Schwartz provides healthy "thin" alternatives. .

"Diets Still Don't Work"
B ob Schwartz, Ph.D.
This is an update on the original.
"The Portion Teller"
Lisa R. Young
This book is written by a licensed nutrionist and provides information about what constitutes an actual portion of different foods, how many portion of each kind of food are required each day to be healthy, and various methods for judging the size of portions. A must have for Americans who have learned to "Supersize" food and watched their waistlines "Supersize" accordingly.
"The Rules of Normal Eating"
Karen R. Koenig
This is just what it says: a book about the way "normal" people think about food and eating.
